ABOUT MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
Madikwe is a prime wildlife reserve safari destination and covers 75,000 hectares making it one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. With 300 resident and migrant birds species and 66 mammal species as well as the Big Five, you can be assured of an interesting game experience. This reserve is very special in that it is one of the few games reserves in the world to be judged as one of the most appropriate and sustainable uses of land for an area.
Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the few reserves in southern Africa, which is malaria free.
The entire reserve has enormous volcanic intrusions known as Inselbergs, wide open plains and the riverine environment along the Marico River in the east of the reserve.
Located in South Africa along the Botswana border, Madikwe is 90km north of Zeerust and 20 km from Gaborone and is just 3.5 hours from both Johannesburg and Pretoria. The reserve has a rich diversity of vegetation which ensures a wide range of game to the area. This naturally affords ideal game viewing opportunities. lies within a transition region between Lowveld bushveld and the Kalahari thornveld. As a result the region is host to an incredible diversity of species from both ecosystems.

Madikwe represents an extension to this philosophy in that it is run as a joint venture between the State, the private sector and local communities. The success of this approach has made Madikwe the role model for similar ventures being started up elsewhere in South Africa.
