SOWETO
Soweto is famous for many historical events in the recent and not so recent past and of course for its amazing people, sport and culture. Its origins and growth however, mirror that of Johannesburg and have their roots in the migrant labour system that helped to build the massive mining and industrial sector that makes the area so unique. The brutality and hardship from the earliest days and through the Apartheid era is what dominated much of the 20th century yet despite that Soweto is and has grown as a large community, rich and diverse, and the modern city is much changed from the dusty and polluted township of the past.
Our tours visit some of the major sites in Soweto such as Kliptown, Orlando, Vilakazi street and Mandela House, Hector Peterson memorial, Oppenheimer Tower amongst others. We do not visit peoples' homes. In time we intend to engage local operators who live in Soweto to conduct social tours, bike rides, walking tours etc.
Soweto and it’s neighbouring areas show great enterprise and the tourism benefits of world interest in SA. Our young democratic country remains a topic of interest in the world and Soweto is a township that is rich in history and also a place for seeing how the country can turn around the former strife torn townships. We look forward to sharing this wonderful place with you.
